New USDA Website Provides School Meals Resources

To mark the start of the 2012-13 school year, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has created a new website to help parents, students, and educators prepare for changes to school meals per the Healthy, Hunger Free Kids Act of 2010. The website features a back to school video from First Lady Michelle Obama, as well as a “School Day Just Got Healthier” toolkit which contains brochures, fact sheets, fliers, model school lessons, and templates. The updated standards for school meals, which were finalized in January 2012, provide daily fruits and vegetables, increased offerings of whole grains, and reduced amounts of saturated fat, added sugar and sodium. These new requirements represent the first major changes to school meals in more than 15 years.
