SALT LAKE CITY — Around 6 million Americans have
reported they do not vote because they do not know how to register, or they
missed their state’s voter registration deadline, according to the U.S. Census.
Utah has been reported as having one of the lowest voting rates in the
country.
Multicultural Affairs wants to ensure
that all Utahns have the opportunity to register and participate in this year’s
general election. “In Utah the ethnic population represents
approximately 20 percent of the total population.
As the State of Utah becomes more diverse, it is important that all groups
participate in the political process of voting,” Multicultural Affairs Director
Claudia Nakano said.
In recognition of National Voter
Registration Day and in partnership with the Lieutenant Governor’s Office, on
Sept. 25, Multicultural Affairs will host a one-day event to help register or
re-register voters ahead of the voter registration deadline. The event will be
at the Rio Grande Depot, located at 300 South Rio Grande Street, from 9 a.m. to
7 p.m. To register to vote, individuals must be at least 18 years
old on or before Nov. 6, 2012, must be a citizen of the United States, and must
be a resident of Utah for at least 30 days before Nov. 6, 2012.
