Message from President Obama regarding Minority Health Month in April

April 1, 2016

I send greetings to all those observing National Minority Health Month.

Our Nation was built on an enduring belief that we are all created equal—regardless of the color of our skin or the station into which we were born. From the ambitions we hold for ourselves to the way we take care of our health, this founding premise serves as the guidepost of our national life. Yet to this day, minorities continue to experience health care gaps that leave their communities behind. During National Minority Health Month, we recommit to taking action to overcome these disparities.

This year’s theme, “Accelerating Health Equity for the Nation,” highlights the necessity for the public health community, government entities, and even private citizens, to join in a spirit of camaraderie to ensure no one misses a chance to get the care they need to thrive. My Administration is doing everything we can to play a part in these important efforts, and thanks to the Affordable Care Act, more than 20 million people now know the peace of mind that comes with quality, affordable health care.

This work is ongoing, and in order for all our people to lead safe, healthy lives, we must put aside the differences that cast us apart. As you rededicate yourselves to building a fairer, more inclusive health care system, I wish you all the best.

-President Obama
